Information literacy is a set of skills which enable people to "recognize when information is needed and [. . .] to locate, evaluate, and use effectively the needed information" (ACRL Standards).
While information literacy includes information technology skills, it encompasses much more. Information is viewed in its broadest sense, including such skills as evaluation of text and graphic messages, and the creation of new knowledge using research as a base. Hence, information literacy is an essential component of student success and forms a basis for lifelong learning.
